Cillian Murphy: The Irishman won the first Oscar as leading man from his country
Cillian Murphy, a man from Ireland who currently resides in the UK, is the first person from Ireland to win the Oscar. His film ‘Oppenheimer‘ also won Best Picture, Best Direction for Christopher Nolan, and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr (The Iron Man fame).
The Oscar was given to Cillian as he received the award for the best leading actor for his great performance as a nuclear scientist J Robert Oppenheimer.
In his speech, Murphy talked about how “overwhelmed” he is to have won the Oscar today plus he said, “I’m the proudest of Irish men who speak today.” By thanking Nolan and the team who worked on the film for the “Wildest, most, elation and most exemplary journey he had with them”.
Murphy also heaped praise on all the crew members and other supporting members. He ended his speech by talking about the man who was responsible for creating the atomic bomb and cause of so much destruction and lives in the world, later dedicating the movie to all the peacemakers around the world.
The event ended with Nolan’s Oppenheimer winning seven Oscar awards. Robert Downey Jr. won the Best Supporting Actor award for his performance in the role of US government official Lewis Strauss as seen in the Oppenheimer biopic.
